Boulder is the type of place, that whenever I leave... I'm always happy to return. No matter if it was a day trip to the mountains, or an overseas adventure for weeks, the Flatirons are always a sight for sore eyes. This is my rendition of the Flatirons from Marshall Mesa, looking Northwest.

I've always thought chameleons were really cool. They look like alien lizards, or mini-dinasours with auto-camoflauge. And not just human-style, brown green and black camo, but vibrant-neon-camo.

This is another piece inspired by my time at the cabin this past winter. I did a lot of back country snowboarding in the area, and there was a huge red fox that I would see almost daily. Every time we crossed paths, I felt that crazy energy that makes your hair stand on end… an electricity. He would usually appear in the peripheral, at the edge of the forest… and only for a second.

Anyone who has ever been to Boulder, whether you live here, or you’re just passing through, chances are, somewhere you have a photograph of the Flatirons. They are an amazing natural landmark that can be seen for miles. Around town, they are an ever-present reminder of how beautiful and unique a place Boulder is.

There's something magical about encountering a buck in the forest. Here in Boulder the female doe are a dime-a-dozen, they bed down in our yards, they cause traffic jams, they eat the greens from our gardens... it seems like there are everywhere. But out in the forest, coming across a buck with a full rack is quite a different experience...

The fox is one of those super-mysterious animals that's always exciting to see, and I feel like I've been seeing them everywhere lately. I'm pretty fascinated with animal totems, and whenever I cross paths with one I feel a connection to I'll do some research...In many cultures' folklore, the fox is considered a messenger from an alternate world capable of shape-shifting and invisibility.

The closer you look into things...the more you'll see. I have found this particularly true in nature on bark and leaves. When you view them from a distance, you see one level of patterns and textures. The more you focus in, the more details within the patterns become visible. If you want to get crazy and bust out the microscope, then that's a whole different ball-game.

Here's one just in time for the holidays... basically I took my piece, "Best Buds" and winterized it. I know it's a bit ridiculous, but I just couldn't resist.

The symbolism of the bear totem focuses on inner strength through meditation and introspection, leading eventually to illumination; as these massive creatures spend much of their lives in solitude during hibernation… Then, when spring comes around they burst into action. Capable of running upwards of 50mph, charging across rugged mountain sides and through raging rivers, they have to ability to go from lumbering giant, to flying beast in a heartbeat.

One of my favorite things about living in Colorado is being surrounded by the dramatic landscapes. The Flatirons in Boulder are certainly some of the most inspirational in my life, and I’ve been drawing them in one form or another since I first moved here back in 2002. Their presence is powerful, and they are constantly reminding me of how amazing this planet is.

Despite being named after one of the most famous wizards, my dog Merlin doesn't know many magic tricks or spells... although he can make a piece of pizza disappear right before your eyes! He's got an amazing life for a dog, and really only cares about three things, chasing rabbits, squirrels, tennis balls, sticks...(basically anything that's running or being thrown), eating, and sleeping.

I have been fortunate to come across a couple of wild moose in my day. Once while snowboarding in the backcountry outside of Jackson, WY, and again in the Indian Peaks Wilderness above Nederland, CO. Both encounters were completely unexpected, and super alarming. There really is no way to prepare for how it feels to come around a corner and be standing face to face with a 10 ft. tall animal with massive antlers.
